Yesterday at school, after playing in the snow,(yes, we still have plenty of snow in northern NH) and making Harry Potter snow sculptures and getting wet, everyone tumbled inside and settled in for some reading. Once a month or so, we do Buddy Reading, with the students reading to one another. So now my room is full of a litany of whispers, voices and giggles because so many different kinds of books are being read. Some of the boys, as usual, pick non-fiction to “ohh” and “ahh” over the biggest, fastest, and strangest “things”. The younger girls love to read the same picture books over and over again, still acting surprised by it all. The older students like to share the novel they are reading – but that usually needs to include some background information. Some of the pairs seat close together and share holding the book. Others seat far apart, barely able to hear each other read. There is, of course, lots of discussion over the pages. Hopefully they are talking about the book. I want them all to develop their own love of reading. Readers are writers and writers are readers.
